The February death of Natasha McKenna, a woman who died after a Fairfax County sheriff's deputy shocked her four times with a Taser while she was handcuffed in jail, was recently ruled an accident. McKenna had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, according to the autopsy report. McKenna's death continues two narratives about police in the United States that have gained notoriety in recent months: that officers kill unarmed black people with alarming regularity, and that they struggle to handle the mentally ill. Under a statute signed into law by the Wyoming governor this spring, you have just committed a crime and could face up to one year in prison. Wyoming doesn’t, of course, care about pictures of geysers or photo competitions. But photos are a type of data, and the new law makes it a crime to gather data about the condition of the environment across most of the state if you plan to share that data with the state or federal government.
