ALERT: ISIS Reportedly Beheads American Jounalist in Iraq, video posted on the Internet

James Foley, missing U.S. journalist, feared dead in ISIS beheading (CBC) Islamic State of Iraq and Syria insurgents released a video on Tuesday purportedly showing the beheading of U.S. journalist James Foley, who had gone missing in Syria nearly two years ago. The video, titled "A Message To America," was posted on social media sites. It was not immediately possible to verify. According to an FBI missing persons alert, Foley had employed a translator to help him travel across the Syrian-Turkish border in late 2012. The translator was also taken, but later released. ISIS's sweep through northern Iraq, bringing it close to Baghdad and in control of the second city, Mosul, drew U.S. air strikes on the country for the first time since the end of the American occupation in 2011. The Sunni militant group has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria in areas it controls. The White House said on Tuesday that U.S. intelligence agents were working to verify the authenticity of the video. "We have seen a video that purports to be the murder of U.S. citizen James Foley by [ISIS]. The intelligence community is working as quickly as possible to determine its authenticity," White House spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said. "If genuine, we are appalled by the brutal murder of an innocent American journalist and we express our deepest condolences to his family and friends." A Twitter account set up by his family to help find him, was aware of the latest development, stating: "We know that many of you are looking for confirmation or answers. Please be patient until we all have more information, and keep the Foleys in your thoughts and prayers." On Monday, ISIS claimed responsibility for the kidnapping of a Japanese national in Syria. Foley, a freelance journalist working for the international news website GlobalPost, had been captured before while reporting in a conflict zone. He was among four journalists held in Libya in early 2011, all of whom were subsequently released. BREAKING NEWS: ISIS Says It Beheaded Kidnapped Journalist James Foley, Posts Graphic Video. (IBT) Journalist James Foley, who was reportedly kidnapped in Syria in 2012, has been beheaded, a graphic video released by supposed Islamic State militants purports to show. The video appears to show Foley kneeling beside a man dressed in all black. It begins with a speech by President Obama announcing the U.S. military would begin targeted airstrikes against the Islamic State, the group that has declared a caliphate across parts of Syria and Iraq also known as ISIS, to stop its advance on Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan. The video switches to a black screen with white writing that reads: "A Message to America." Foley then begins to recite a message, presumably written for him by ISIS, about his "real killer" -- America. At the end of the video, the executioner begins sawing at Foley's neck with a knife. After a blackout, the last image appears to show Foley's head, detached, lying on top of his body. Youtube removed the video shortly after it was posted. His death could not be confirmed independently. Foley was a freelance journalist, originally from New Hampshire, who wrote for media outlets including Global Post.
