Army Manual Outlines Crowd Control Protocols

Following the Ferguson riots, where police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into crowds of angry protesters, cries of injustice ring out across the nation, raising questions about civil liberties and police militarization. Shortly after, President Obama clearly said military and police should remain two very different groups. Most people agree, the military and the police should remain distinctly different in their policies and practices. But are they any different right now? We already reviewed the military grade weaponization of local police departments. Now, we have a copy of a new army manual that shows specific protocols for handling large crowds. When we reviewed the policies, they are eerily similar to the police action in Ferguson. The handbook teaches army forces to prepare for violence during any protests, no matter how peaceful. It warns civil unrest can quickly turn into full-scale riots. Special exceptions of extreme violence are permitted in order to protect the life of a politician. The handbook even has a chilling breakdown of the human body, armed forces are supposed to target during a riot. First, if the United States military is not supposed to ever be used to police their own citizens, why does an Army-issue handbook teach them exactly how to do just that? And second, armed to the hilt, police in Ferguson appear to be far more concerned with self-defense and preservation than they are with serving and protecting their fellow residents. The American right to peaceably assemble under the First Amendment is under urgent crisis. Support Indymedia!
