Chagas disease posts lifelong threat of heart failure

Chagas disease is a potentially life-threatening illness transmitted by the kissing bug, which carries the protozoan parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi. It is mostly found in Central and South America. It is estimated that it infects as many as 11 million people. The kissing bug often bites victims on the lips when they're sleeping and leaves behind parasite-laden feces. The two-stage-disease starts with a highly curable acute stage. If untreated, it progresses to a lifelong chronic stage and could lead to heart failure and death.
