Yuko Obuchi became Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister last week. She made her first inspection of the plant in Fukushima Prefecture on Sunday. Obuchi thanked plant workers for the difficult work they are doing. She said the decommissioning of the reactors is moving forward. She stressed that for the future of Japan and Fukushima's recovery, the government and Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operates Fukushima Daiichi, must work together to overcome many difficulties. One of the key issues is dealing with the increasing amounts of contaminated water. Emergency meeting discusses dengue infection Japan Sep. 6, 2014 - Updated 12:01 UTC-4 Japanese health officials and experts met on Saturday to discuss ways to contain the spread of dengue fever. Officials of the health ministry, the Tokyo metropolitan government and Tokyo's 23 ward offices as well as experts on infectious diseases attended the emergency meeting held at the ministry. Health minister Yasuhisa Shiozaki called for immediate action to prevent the disease from spreading. He urged the participants to do all they can to enable people to use parks and other public facilities safely. The first infections in Japan in about 70 years were found last week. Three people who visited Yoyogi Park in central Tokyo were diagnosed with the disease. 74 people in 14 prefectures have so far come down with symptoms. (AP) - The U.S. Department of Energy failed to meet a deadline to begin emptying radioactive waste from a Hanford tank with an interior leak.The Monday deadline to start the work had been ordered by the state of Washington.The Tri-City Herald reports the Energy Department and the state have been in settlement talks since July regarding Tank AY-102.
