China criticizes Washington's move to sell four used warships to Taiwan

China has criticized the United States' decision to sell used warships to Taiwan, which it regards as a renegade province. The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Friday that it does not approve of the deal. US President Barack Obama recently signed a bill, authorizing the sale of up to four Hazard Perry-class guided missile frigates to Taiwan. This is the first time Taiwan has purchased military hardware from the US since 2011, when the US transferred upgrades to F-16 fighter jets. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry thanked the US government for the transaction, saying it was maintaining its commitment to the US, in line with the Taiwan Relations Act of the US Congress, in which Washington pledged to support Taiwan's security. The Taiwanese Defense Ministry stated that it would most likely only purchase two of the vessels this year.
