Organ trade on the rise in Africa

According to African and Italian news agencies, illegal organ trade is flourishing across large parts of northern and sub-Saharan Africa. The reports also claim that most of the victims are of Eritrean or Sudanese nationalities. As this footage by the Italian coastal guards show, hundreds of Eritreans are trying to reach Europe by the sea. Human trafficking mafia would charge them with up to 200,000 euros for taking them to Italian and Spanish shores. But those who can’t afford the cost could sell their organs. Lack of established rules about organ transplants in Europe and Africa has been problematic. Illegal organ trade has seen a rise across many conflict hit countries. It is the second most profitable illegal trade after drug smuggling. The ISIL terrorist group has been involved in selling organs from kidnapped Iraqi and Syrian nationals. Earlier this year, the Italian Parliament enforced a law punishing mafia human organ trade. However it remains to be seen whether other countries will follow such an act or not.
