Saudi forces fire at residential areas in Awamiyah

Activists say security forces opened fire on residential areas in the Shia-populated town, causing damage to people’s homes. They then withdrew from the town. Awamiyah has been the scene of deadly violence in the past few weeks. Several political activists have been killed and a number of others arrested by regime forces. Saudi Arabia is known for giving a heavy-handed response to dissent. Authorities have been quelling anti-regime protests mainly held in the oil-rich Eastern Province.
