Venezuela vows to respond 'soon' to new US sanctions
Caracas has pledged to respond to the sanctions Washington imposed on seven Venezuelan officials on Monday. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez says the response will be made public soon. It came after White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said the Venezuelan officials will face asset freezes in the US and will be banned from using US financial systems. Earnest said the measures were part of an executive order by US President Barack Obama. He also called Venezuela a national security threat to the US. Tensions between Washington and Caracas heightened this month after Venezuela set a two-week deadline for the US to cut its embassy staff in Caracas. Venezuela said that's a response to Washington's conspiracies against the government of President Nicholas Maduro.
