Federal lawmakers are digging into the massive fraud scandal unfolding in Minnesota, where dozens of Somali foreign nationals have been arrested and accused of diverting more than a billion dollars in taxpayer funds to terrorist organizations.
The investigation is widening, with more charges expected, and a new review by Open The Books identifying additional federal social-service grants flowing directly into Minnesota’s Somali community.
Rachel O’Brien, the deputy public policy editor at Open The Books, says there are three main schemes: Feeding Our Future, which claimed to feed children from low-income families; an autism program where parents allegedly claimed their children were autistic to obtain federal kickbacks; and a housing scheme that purported to find homes for elderly residents.
