June 20th, 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a disturbing split verdict in the case of Michael D. Turner, an unemployed South Carolina dad who was repeatedly put in jail for child support arrears although he had no ability to pay his court-ordered support. The case hinged on whether or not an impoverished non-custodial parent has the right to court-appointed legal counsel when facing jail time for arrears. In its 5-4 split verdict, the court ruled that while it is impermissible to jail poor parents for arrears without giving them a chance to be heard in court, that non-custodial parents facing jail time are not entitled to court appointed legal defenders. China's Dagong Global Credit Rating cut its credit rating for United States debt by one notch to A-minus from A on Thursday, saying a deal struck by Congress to raise the government's borrowing ceiling failed to solve the cause of its debt problem. The downgrade put the United States several notches below Dagong's top rating and on par with Brazil, Israel and Panama, among others. Dagong said that the temporary fix of the debt issue would not defuse the fundamental conundrum of the U.S. fiscal deficit or improve repayment ability in the long-term, but could trigger defaults at any time in the future. (AP) — A man who admitted making death threats on Facebook against the top Democrats in Congress and other high-ranking officeholders was sentenced Wednesday to 15 months in prison at a court session that focused on his alcoholism. Lawrence Mulqueen, 50, told the federal judge the postings would not have appeared "if I'd had the opportunity to review them after sobering up." 10/16/13 - Towards the tail end of the House vote on ending the government shutdown , a stenographer snapped and started ranting mindlessly on the House floor and had to be escorted out of the room. Very little is known about her thus far, but there is audio of her rant, and needless to say it is quite something. She grabbed the House microphone and proceeded to shout, "He will not be mocked!" She repeated that a number of times and then said, "The greatest deception here is this is not one nation under God! It never was!" She also, for some bizarre reason, went on about Freemasons writing the Constitution, and cried, "You cannot serve two masters!" as she was escorted away. One member of Congress told The Washington Post that this stenographer is "well-known and liked," and so they have a lot of "sympathy" for her, while another said this was very "disturbing" to witness.
