Almost a year after Japan pledged to double hazard pay at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, workers are still in the dark about how much extra they are getting paid, if anything, for cleaning up the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Under pressure to improve working conditions at Fukushima after a series of radioactive water leaks last year, Tokyo Electric Power Co President Naomi Hirose promised in November to double the hazard pay the utility allocates to its subcontractors for plant workers. http://bit.ly/1zfNXza WADENA, SACKATCHEWAN-A major train derailment took place at 10:40am CST near Wadena in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Reports indicate that as many as 26 railway cars have derailed, and the train was hauling a total of 100 cars. Large explosions and massive plumes of smoke have been reported by witnesses near the scene. Officials say the smoke pouring from the accident is toxic, and due to that concern are keeping residents several miles away from the scene for their own safety. CBC News reports that many of the trains cars contained hazardous materials that could cause environmental damage as well as become a health issue to those exposed. Christian militias in Central African Republic have called for the president and prime minister to resign and have ordered their ministers to pull out of the government, striking a blow to efforts aimed at quelling violence in the country. The former French colony has been engulfed in turmoil since the mainly Muslim Seleka rebel coalition seized power in the majority Christian country in March 2013. In an appeal issued Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation asked the public for information on the identity of a suspected Islamic State militant, who speaks with what officials describe as "a North American accent." A late-night blast in the Nicaraguan capital of Managua was most likely caused by a small meteorite believed to have fallen into a wooded area on Saturday night. “All the evidence, that we've confirmed on-site, corresponds exactly with a meteorite and not with any other type of event," Jose Millan, from the Nicaraguan Institute of Earth Studies, was quoted by Reuters as saying. The meteorite is believed to have entered the Earth’s atmosphere with a 50 degree inclination, Univision reported. It fell in an inhabited area, close to a military base and west to the principal airport in Nicaragua. According to AFP, no one was injured and no flights were affected by the explosion which left a crater 12 meters in diameter and 5.5 meters deep. Authorities believe the meteorite was a piece of the asteroid “2014 RC” which passed close to the Earth on Sunday and was estimated to be about 20 meters big or the size of a house. Wal-Mart said it would no longer provide health benefits to some part-time workers in the United States due to ballooning healthcare costs. The company said on Monday it would stop health benefits for part-time associates who work less than 30 hours. The company said in a blog post, the move is expected to impact about 2 percent of its workforce. A range of international organizations are ramping up their responses to help children who are increasingly affected by the Ebola outbreak in western Africa. According to the World Health Organization’s latest assessment, an estimated 7,470 people have been infected with Ebola in western Africa since the start of the most recent outbreak, resulting in 3,431 reported deaths. Most of those who are dying are parents, creating a secondary crisis for their children. Super Typhoon Vongfong has reached meteorological perfection, and hence peak destructiveness, as it churns across the warm waters of the Western Pacific Ocean toward Japan. New climate model and satellite data suggests that ocean warming from 1970 to 2004 in the upper levels of Southern Hemisphere oceans has been massively underestimated. The findings are reported in two new studies in the journal Nature Climate Change. The second of the four-part series of the Blood Moon eclipses will show itself on Wednesday, Oct. 8. For about an hour, a bigger moon of rust and orange shades will loom over the skies. The blood moon is expected to outsize the previous one. It is said to be 5.3 percent larger than the first, making it look almost like a super moon. NASA says it will begin at 6:25 a.m. ET and will end by 7:24 a.m. ET. Those who live in the West Coast will be luckiest. Sky watchers from North America and the Hawaiian Islands can expect the moon to turn bigger and redder before sunrise, while spectators in Australia, eastern Asia, and New Zealand will be able to enjoy the rosy view after sunset.
