A noteworthy earthquake swarm began a few hours ago ( late afternoon September 25 2014 ) at the base of Mammoth Mountain, located on the flank of the Mono Lake California supervolcano caldera. The whole volcanic complex is known as the "Long Valley Caldera". Originally formed 760,000 years ago, supposedly erupting every 200,000 years. In 1980, the volcano experienced uplift and major movement, ironically very close to the same time as the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens. Today, in 2014, this past week, we saw movement at Mt. Saint Helens, Yellowstone, and several other dormant volcanoes in California, Nevada, and Arizona. U.S. President Barack Obama took a historic step on Thursday by dramatically expanding an area of the Pacific Ocean that is off limits to fishing and other marine resources development, such as deep-sea mining. By adding to the existing Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument, which was established under former U.S. President George W. Bush in 2009, Obama is expanding it to six times its existing size. Iraq's prime minister said Thursday his country's intelligence operation has uncovered a plot for an attack on subway systems in the United States and Paris. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he was told of the plot by Baghdad, and that it was the work of foreign fighters of the Islamic State group in Iraq.
