A group of 10 black youths blocked a white couple’s car in the New York borough of Brooklyn , brutally beating the husband and slamming the wife’s head into the pavement by her hair as they shouted racial epithets , officials said. Ronald Russo, 30, and his wife, Alanna , 30, were stopped at a red light Monday night when the group crossed Avenue U at East 58th Street, the New York Daily News reported. Mr. Russo honked his horn when the light turned green to get the youths out of the way, but they then began kicking the car, according to the criminal complaint. Mr. Russo got out to check if the vandals had damaged his car, but he soon was dragged to the ground and severely beaten. The U.S. Navy is being rocked by a bribery scandal that federal investigators say has reached high into the officer corps and exposed a massive overbilling scheme run by an Asian defense contractor that provided prostitutes and other kickbacks. Among those arrested on corruption charges are a senior agent for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and a Navy commander who escaped Cambodia’s “killing fields” as a child only to make a triumphant return to the country decades later as the skipper of a U.S. destroyer. The investigation has also ensnared a Navy captain who was relieved of his ship’s command this month in Japan. In an effort to undermine cryptographic systems worldwide, the National Security Agency has manipulated global encryption standards, utilized supercomputers to crack encrypted communications, and has persuaded -- sometimes coerced -- internet service providers to give it access to protected data. Is there any way to confidentially communicate online? We speak with security technologist and encryption specialist Bruce Schneier , who is a fellow at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society . He has been working with The Guardian on its recent NSA stories, and has read hundreds of top-secret NSA documents provided by Edward Snowden . "I have resisted saying this up to now, and I am saddened to say it, but the U.S. has proved to be an unethical steward of the internet. The U.K. is no better.
