Health officials in New Orleans were alerted Wednesday of a ship scheduled to arrive in the Lower Ninth Ward with men suffering from some sort of illness. Officials in New Orleans confirmed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Coast Guard and various government epidemiologists are awaiting the ship's arrival Wednesday evening. According to a release from the CDC, the ship was reported to have traveled to a port in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and others in Africa. Hundreds of heavily armed Australian police raided homes in Sydney and Brisbane before dawn on Thursday, launching a large-scale "counter-terrorism operation" just days after the country raised its threat level to high for the first time. (CTV) Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has been diagnosed with a rare type of malignant tumour, the doctor overseeing his care announced Wednesday. Dr. Zane Cohen at Mount Sinai Hospital said Ford was diagnosed after a “comprehensive medical assessment.” Ford will undergo chemotherapy, Cohen said. Since he was hospitalized last Thursday with a “fair sized” tumour in his abdomen, Ford had been undergoing tests to determine whether the mass was benign or cancerous. A group monitoring the war said on Wednesday, Islamic State has won new recruits in Syria since President Barack Obama signaled last week that air strikes against the group will be expanded from Iraq to its strongholds in northern and eastern Syria. Hackers associated with the Chinese government have repeatedly breached the computer systems of U.S. companies, including airlines and technology firms, that are involved in the movement of U.S. troops and military equipment, a U.S. Senate panel has found. A top U.S. general said on Wednesday Congress should look hard at whether to continue automatic budget cuts that weaken the U.S. military at a time when security around the world is deteriorating. The rapid advance of Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria and Russia's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region has fueled calls for a rethink of the hundreds of billions of dollars in automatic cuts, known as "sequestration". The Pentagon has been struggling to implement nearly $1 trillion in cuts to projected spending over a decade as required by a 2011 law. The law required $487 billion in direct cuts to defense spread over a decade, plus another $500 billion in automatic, across-the-board reductions that would not take place if Congress negotiated an alternative way to curb spending. At least 20 people were killed when Shi'ite Muslim rebels clashed with army soldiers and allied tribesmen in an outer suburb of the Yemeni capital of Sanaa.
