The Federal Government Runs Out of Money at 11:59 P.M.

With the clock ticking towards a midnight deadline to keep the government open, leaders have delayed a vote on a massive spending package as they scramble to find enough bipartisan support to pass it. The delay came hours after the measure barely cleared a procedural hurdle to keep it alive. After GOP leaders postponed a scheduled 2pm ET vote, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi - who opposes the inclusion of two provisions of the bill - told fellow Democrats they have increased their leverage to amend the legislation and strip out portions they dislike. http://nbcnews.to/12Tor7i http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Oceans May Have 10 Times More Plastic Than We Thought

The world's oceans may contain about 10 times more plastic than the most recent studies suggest. The new figure estimates that the oceans hold more than 250,000 tons of trash, a number vastly different from a past estimate, which suggested the oceans' plastic is mysteriously disappearing . Scientists arrived at the new number by combining visual estimates of trash volume with data collected from trawling the oceans with nets. That's according to study co-author Markus Eriksen, director of research for the 5 Gyres Institute , an organization aiming to understand the plastic pollution in the ocean. http://on.mash.to/1yF2y4X http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

China to CyberAttack USA Power Grid per NSA

China to CyberAttack USA Power Grid per NSA. According to the NSA director, Admiral Michael Rogers, the USA is helpless against a cyber-attack on it's electrical power grid by Chinese hackers. The electric power grid vulnerability is high in the USA. Any savvy person should have alternative power sources in case of a widespread electrical power outage. Portable gas and diesel generators would be a temporary solution, but could make a huge difference, especially if such a power failure came in the winter time. Actually, events that sometimes occur, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and ice and snow storms have interrupted the power at times. Having some emergency power can be a matter of life and death, in certain situations.

Obama Administration Says Cheap Oil Helping U.S. Economy

The Obama administration said on Thursday that falling oil prices are helping the U.S. economy and are unlikely to lead to a reduction in production at the country's shale oil fields. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview in New York that was broadcast by network CNBC, "Lower oil prices are like a tax cut for the economy so in terms of the macroeconomic impact it's net a positive." He said America's energy boom means falling oil prices do have some economic drawbacks, but that this is unlikely to affect the level of output in the burgeoning shale energy sector. Lew also said, "For the shale projects, I don't expect you're going to see a reduction in production." http://bit.ly/1wEweUt http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Alert! Canada Just Made It Legal for Police to Search Your Cellphone Without A Warrant!

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza SUBSCRIBE TO THE NEW DAHBOO7 CHANNEL: http://bit.ly/1yuzIUA A divided Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that police can conduct a limited search of suspect’s cellphone without getting a search warrant, but they must follow strict rules. By a 4-3 margin, the court said in a precedent-setting ruling that the search must be directly related to the circumstances of a person's arrest and the police must keep detailed records of the search. Three dissenting justices said the police must get a search warrant in all cases except in rare instances where there is a danger to the public or the police, or if evidence could be destroyed. http://bit.ly/16bDv2u http://bit.ly/1yEt8uS

Torture Fallout: CIA Director Responds to Damning Report

CIA Director John Brennan will face reporters Thursday in a rare press conference, the first time he has spoken publicly since a Senate report took the spy agency to task for the brutality and mismanagement of its interrogation program in the years after Sept. 11. In a long-awaited report issued Tuesday, the Senate Intelligence Committee said that the interrogation program was far harsher than the CIA had suggested, including the use of waterboarding, sleep deprivation, humiliation and physical brutality. It also said that the program was ineffective, and that CIA officials had misled Congress, the White House and the public for years about details of the program. http://nbcnews.to/16bDsns http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Catherine Crump: The small and surprisingly dangerous detail the police track about you

A very unsexy-sounding piece of technology could mean that the police know where you go, with whom, and when: the automatic license plate reader. These cameras are innocuously placed all across small-town America to catch known criminals, but as lawyer and TED Fellow Catherine Crump shows, the data they collect in aggregate could have disastrous consequences for everyone the world over. More Looting, One Arrest as Bay Area Protests Dwindle

Police in Oakland, California, said demonstrators broke windows and looted stores and that one person was arrested for allegedly assaulting an officer in the latest protest of police activity in the United States. Oakland and neighboring Berkeley have seen nightly demonstrations since the weekend, in response to decisions by two grand juries not to charge white police officers in the killings of unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri, and New York City. The city of Oakland said in a statement that on Wednesday night, about 150 protesters - a smaller crowd than on previous evenings - left the campus of University of California-Berkeley and demonstrated without incident before marching south into Oakland. http://yhoo.it/1zUPlXD http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ
