French Girl Arrested On Way To Allegedly Join Jihad

A 16-year-old girl suspected of trying to reach Syria to join Islamist rebels has been arrested in the southeastern city of Nice, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said Sunday. Thousands of foreign fighters, many from Western Europe, have joined extremist Islamist groups fighting in Syria and Iraq, according to U.S. and European intelligence estimates. Cazeneuve unveiled measures in April to try to prevent young French Muslims and others from becoming radicalized, including a hotline set up for parents to signal suspicious behavior in their children. http://nbcnews.to/1u3RdeR http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

U.S., Foreign Fighters In Syria Pose 'very Serious Threat' To U.S.: Lawmaker

A top Republican lawmaker said Sunday, hundreds of U.S., British and Canadian citizens who have trained with Islamic State fighters trying to carve out their own state in Iraq and Syria pose a "very serious threat" to the United States. Representative Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, urged the Obama administration to aggressively prosecute U.S. citizens who had trained overseas as it weighed options for how to respond to escalating violence by Islamic State militants in Iraq. He said an attack on the Jewish museum in Brussels in May had shown a new push by extremist groups to carry out attacks on Western targets, and growing efforts to recruit backers on social media. http://bit.ly/VZ4Nnp http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Fact! Monsanto Has Sued Farmers for 16 Years, Never Lost A Single Case!

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza Its On We the People to Stop this Beast! Where is the justice? Since 1997, Monsanto has filed 145 lawsuits, or on average about 9 lawsuits every year for 16 straight years, against farmers who have “improperly reused their patented seeds.” The biotech giant hasn’t lost a single case, either. Not one. This includes when farmers tried to sue Monsanto over cross-pollination of their organic crops with GMO seed. For example, a federal court dismissed one of those cases, saying that it couldn’t protect Monsanto against unfair lawsuits should they side in the farmers’ favor. What about unfair business practices? What about 92% of people saying they want their food labeled if it contains genetically modified ingredients? What about the right of farmers to grow food from seed that hasn’t been altered to turn it into a DNA freak show? http://bit.ly/VZ4Mjk http://bit.ly/VZ4KI9 #News

Islamist Militia Now Guards US Embassy In Libya

An Islamist-allied militia group in control of Libya's capital now guards the U.S. Embassy and its residential compound, a commander said Sunday, as onlookers toured the abandoned homes of diplomats who fled the country more than a month ago. An Associated Press journalist saw holes left by small-arms and rocket fire dotting the residential compound, reminders of weeks of violence between rival militias over control of Tripoli that sparked the evacuation. The breach of a deserted U.S. diplomatic post — including images of men earlier swimming in the compound's algae-filled pools — likely will reinvigorate debate in the U.S. over its role in Libya, more than three years after supporting rebels who toppled dictator Moammar Gadhafi. http://apne.ws/1uhh4PI http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Never Mind Iceland — This Erupting Volcano Is The Real Threat

As Europe and the U.S. fret over a small eruption in Iceland, a far larger volcanic eruption is taking place in Papua New Guinea. And unlike the Icelandic volcano, which merely has the potential to reroute trans-Atlantic flights, the eruption of Mount Tavurvur is already causing damage and threatening lives as well as disrupting international air travel. Mount Tavurvur, which is part of the larger Rabaul caldera, blasted enough ash into the stratosphere on Friday that Qantas Airlines rerouted flights between Sydney and Tokyo, as well as Sydney and Shanghai, to avoid flying through the ash cloud. The volcano is threatening the town of Rabaul, which was destroyed by an eruption in 1994 and rebuilt. http://on.mash.to/VY1PPU http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

No Respite For South Sudan: Cholera Down But Malaria, Parasitic Disease Up: MSF

South Sudan's cholera crisis is waning but humanitarian workers are now battling increased cases of malaria and the parasitic disease kala azar, with children most affected. Conflict between the government and rebels has displaced 1.7 million people, or one in seven of the population, since December, with famine on the horizon. MSF treated about 200 people for kala azar in Upper Nile State, one of the areas worst hit by fighting, in July. With the onset of the rains producing stagnant water for mosquitoes, there has also been a "spike" in malaria. http://bit.ly/1rHqNSd http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Student Evades Monitors, Spreads Ebola To Senegal

A university student infected with Ebola evaded health surveillance for weeks as he slipped into Senegal, carrying the deadly virus to a fifth West African nation showing how quarantines, border closures and flight bans have failed to contain the outbreak. Now health officials must try to identify and monitor all of his contacts in Senegal's capital of Dakar, no small feat in a metropolitan area with more than 2 million people that serves as a major transportation hub and popular destination for European tourists. Minister Awa Marie Coll Seck said the student from Guinea finally showed up at a hospital in Dakar on Tuesday, seeking treatment but concealing that he had been in contact with other Ebola victims. http://apne.ws/1qXUIDn http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

EU To Slap New Sanctions On Russia Over Ukraine

The European Union on Saturday warned that the apparent incursion of Russian troops on Ukrainian soil pushes the conflict closer to a point of no return, with new economic sanctions being drawn up to make Moscow reconsider its position. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, who briefed a summit of the 28-nation EU's leaders in Brussels, said a strong response was needed to the "military aggression and terror" facing his country. Poroshenko told reporters "Thousands of the foreign troops and hundreds of the foreign tanks are now on the territory of Ukraine." http://apne.ws/VXXzzZ http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Heavy Fighting In Libya's Benghazi City; Airport Hit

Heavy clashes broke out between the forces of a renegade general and Islamist fighters in Libya's eastern city of Benghazi on Saturday, killing at least 10 people and showering the airport with rockets, medical and military sources said. Libya is being racked by factional violence as the armed groups which helped topple Muammar Gaddafi in 2011 turn their guns on each other in a struggle to dominate politics and the country's vast oil resources. In Benghazi, forces of retired general Khalifa Haftar have been fighting Islamist brigades including Ansar al-Sharia, blamed by Washington for an attack on the U.S. consulate in September 2012 in which the U.S. ambassador was killed. http://bit.ly/1qXUGvc http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Earlier this month, several Syrian groups, including Islamic State and the al-Nusra Front battled the Lebanese army after the arrest of rebel commander Emad Gomaa in the border town of Arsal. http://yhoo.it/1qXUGeI http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Fee to Renounce U.S. Citizenship Goes Up Fourfold to $2,350

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza The cost of getting rid of US citizenship has quadrupled to $2350, up from $450. The changes will come into effect on September 6th and the State Department says it is necessary to cover the real cost of processing an application to lose citizenship. The price hike marks a sharp u turn from 2010 when the State Department decided on the $450 fee “in order to lessen the impact on those who need the service and not to discourage the utilization of the service, a development the Department feels would be detrimental to national interests.” Announcing the move this week [LINK: http://1.usa.gov/1u11QPE ], the State Department defended it the price tag saying it had to reflect the true cost of the process. http://bit.ly/1wVfWXa #News
