GM Does not Have to Turn Over Notes to Ignition-flaw Plaintiffs: Judge

A U.S. judge on Thursday refused to let plaintiffs’ lawyers suing General Motors Co access notes from lawyers the company hired to prepare an internal report on the automaker's decade-long mishandling of a deadly ignition-switch flaw. While the ruling shields materials that could boost the cases by plaintiffs, they will be able to learn the identities of interviewed witnesses who were not named in the report. http://yhoo.it/1yhvhCs http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

3D-printed Model Heart Helps Doctors Save a Little Girl's Life

Cardiovascular surgeons at Miami Children's Hospital turned to 3D printing to print out a scale replica of a 4-year-old girl's heart so they could plan for a complicated surgery to save the girl's life. Using the 3D-printed model, the doctors were able to plan a surgery that hadn't been performed before using parts from a donor heart, and today young Adanelie Gonzalez's blood is flowing normally and she's recovering in the hospital. It's another example of the miracles 3D-printing is bringing to health care, and if it isn't enough to give you all of the feels, we don't know what will. http://cnet.co/1Bygd2I http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

U.S. Republicans Struggle to Block Obama Immigration Moves

Republicans acknowledged on Thursday it will be difficult for the Senate pass a House of Representatives bill blocking President Barack Obama's immigration initiatives, and vowed not to put security funding at risk in the process. At a policy retreat in Pennsylvania, House and Senate Republicans discussed the path forward after the House approved on Wednesday a Department of Homeland Security spending bill that would stop the executive actions on immigration. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said of the House bill, "We're going to try to pass it." http://bit.ly/1CcC0uA http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Former CIA Agent Exposes ANOTHER Fake FBI Terror Plot

One big question here: How much of this story can we independently verify? Right now, the only source feeding us information is the FBI themselves. In the last few years, we’ve seen several other American citizens thrown in jail after FBI sting operations, only to see critics come forward and blame the FBI of ENTRAPMENT, preying on weak individuals, stalking them for months, and convincing them to participate in these staged fake terror plots. A lot of accusations, and very few answers from the FBI. For more on this story, we turn now to 22-year CIA veteran, Michael Scheuer. He was head of the unit in charge of capturing Osama bin Laden. He knows a lot about counter terrorism and how these operations work. Michael, thanks for joining us. Support Indymedia! IRS Warns of Delayed Tax Returns

If you’re hoping to get your tax refund right away. You may be disappointed. 600 million dollars in budget cuts at the IRS mean a reduction in overtime and temporary staff. And now, we’re hearing once again, that could mean taxpayers could wait an extra week for their return. The IRS could also lose 2 billion in revenue from fewer audits, because there are fewer people to process those audits. Commissioner John Koskinen told employees at the IRS, 18 hundred tax collectors would lose their jobs because of the new spending cuts. http://usat.ly/1BygaUO Support Indymedia! According to police in Center Township, a security guard first stopped Roxanne Rimer, 27, at a Kohl's for suspected shoplifting. Bank of America, the second-largest U.S. bank by assets, reported a 14 percent fall in quarterly profit, largely due to lower revenue from fixed-income trading. Net income attributable to common shareholders fell to $2.74 billion, or 25 cents per share, in the fourth quarter from $3.18 billion, or 29 cents per share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had estimated earnings of 31 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. UN warns of dire situation of Syrian, Iraqi refugees

The UN is calling for massive international aid to help Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The UN high commissioner for refugees called for massive support from the international community for displaced Syrians and Iraqis. Antonio Guterres warned that the refugees situation is extremely worrying. The UN refugee chief added that host communities and governments needed more funding. He said international donors had provided only around half of the UNHCR's needs last year. More than three million Syrians have fled the ISIL atrocities in their country which started in 2011, spreading to neighboring states. U.S. Jobless Claims Rise to Four-month High

The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits last week increased to the highest level since early September, but the underlying trend continued to point to a strengthening labor market. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits rose by 19,000 to a seasonally adjusted 316,000 for the week ended Jan. The four-week moving average of claims, considered a better measure of labor market trends as it irons out week-to-week volatility, rose by only 6,750 to 298,000 last week. It has remained below 300,000, which is associated with a firming labor market, for 18 weeks. http://yhoo.it/1IDnSyI http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

One in Three Americans Believe Police 'routinely Lie': Survey

A survey released on Thursday by Reuters and the IPSOS polling organization showed, that while most Americans approve of the work being done by their local police, nearly a third feel that some officers "routinely lie to serve their own interests". The findings come as scrutiny on police has been heightened in recent months by the killing of unarmed blacks by white officers, which has raised questions about police treatment of racial minorities. The survey said, that while distrust is significant, nearly three-quarters of respondents approve the job done by their local police. The survey showed that 56 percent of African-American respondents approved of their local police. http://yhoo.it/1yoe1bF http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Hearing on States' Suit Against Obama Immigration Plan to Begin in U.S. Court

A federal judge in Texas is set to hear arguments on Thursday in a lawsuit brought by two dozen states that seeks to block Obama administration efforts to reduce the threat of deportation for millions of undocumented immigrants. The case led by Texas and supported by several other Republican-controlled states said President Barack Obama's executive order in November violated U.S. constitutional limits on presidential powers. Earlier this week, a dozen states led by Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed a brief defending Obama's policies. http://bit.ly/1yoe2w7 http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Ukraine calls up reservists in response to Russia threat

Ukraine's parliament has approved a mass military call-up for the country's conflict in the east amid security warnings that Russian forces backing separatist rebels have sharply increased their activity. Partial conscription will resume and authorities want 100,000 reservists mobilised to strengthen the frontline as violence escalates after a period of relative calm. "Russian aggression is continuing. There has been a significant surge in the intensity of firing," Oleksander Turchynov, secret… READ MORE : http://bit.ly/1yoe0V3 What are the top stories today? Caesars' Operating Unit Files for Bankruptcy, but Venue Unclear

The operating unit of Caesars Entertainment Corp, the largest U.S. casino company, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday to implement its plan to cut $10 billion of debt, but faced an immediate challenge over where the case should proceed. The company said it has the support of its senior noteholders to implement the plan, which will reduce the operating unit's debt to $8.6 billion from $18.4 billion. Much of the debt is a legacy of the $30 billion leveraged buyout of Harrah's Entertainment that was led by Apollo Global Management and TPG Capital in 2008. Leading the opposition are deep-pocketed hedge funds Appaloosa Management and Oaktree Capital Management. They are among the holders of the $5 billion in junior notes that stand to recover less than 10 percent of what they are owed. http://yhoo.it/1yoe0EF http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Best Buy: We'll Need to Step up E-commerce Amid Sales Slump Ahead

Best Buy's holiday sales were solid, but the company warned of tough days ahead due to pricing pressure and weak demand for electronics. The fix: Step up its e-commerce efforts and moves to sell across multiple channels. If there's one lesson from holiday 2014, it's that retailers have to step up efforts to be more like Amazon and less like brick and mortar dependent players. For many retailers---like Macy's---that means fewer physical stores and more spending on information technology. In addition stores are also becoming distribution centers for retailers like Best Buy. Best Buy offers a good case study of the shifts in retailing. For instance, Best Buy delivered $11.4 billion in holiday sales and its U.S. business had a 2.6 percent gain in same store sales. Sales were driven by large screen TVs and mobile phones. Those gains offset "significant weakness in tablets." Best Buy said online sales were up 13.4 percent and more than half of that sales growth shi...

Target to Close All 133 Canadian Stores; 17,600 Employees Will Lose Jobs

Target is closing all of its stores in Canada, less than two years after its splashy debut. The Minnesota-based retailer announced on Thursday that it plans to discontinue operating its 133 Canadian stores to stem financial losses that went as high as $1 billion a year. Around 17,600 employees are expected to lose their jobs. A Target spokesperson told Mashable that the company's rapid expansion partly led to its failure in Canada. Target said Thursday that it expects about $5.4 billion in fourth-quarter losses from discontinued operations in Canada. It foresees about $275 million of losses on discontinued operations in fiscal 2015. For now, Target has no immediate plans to take another run at the Canadian market. http://on.mash.to/1KO0Nvg http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Immigrants Can Now Get Mexican Birth Certificates In U.S.

Starting Thursday, Mexico's 50 consulates in the U.S. will be able to issue birth certificates to Mexican citizens. The move makes it easier for Mexican immigrants to obtain driver's licenses, passports, work permits and protection from deportation under President Obama's upcoming executive action. Angelica Salas, executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said it helps individuals really begin to formulate their formal identity in this country,. About half of the approximately 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are from Mexico, and experts believe about 3 million could be eligible for executive action under Obama's plan. http://nbcnews.to/1x6q4HT http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Wall St. Starts Fourth-quarter Earnings Season Under Cloud of Worry

Investors opened this earning season weighted down by worries, as weak December retail sales, plummeting copper prices and some high-profile misses raised the specter of a disappointing reporting period. It is still too early to get a proper view of the fourth quarter, with just seven percent of S&P names reporting results so far. But the combination of the global economic decline spreading through the market and the sharp decline in oil prices since June to below $50 a barrel is troubling investors. That could keep the current sell off in stocks continuing for some time, especially if poor earnings reports failed to justify already-high valuations and instead pushed them higher. http://yhoo.it/1x6q4HG http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

OPEC to See Market Share Drop Even as Oil Slump Slows Shale Boom

OPEC said on Thursday the collapse in oil prices is starting to slow growth in U.S. output, although the slowdown will not prevent demand for OPEC's oil falling in 2015 to its lowest in a decade. In a monthly report, the OPEC forecast that demand for the group's oil will drop to less than 30 million barrels a day in 2015, down 140,000 barrels a day from its previous figure... and the lowest since 2004. The U.S. government said this week it expects domestic oil output in 2016 to grow by only 2.2 percent, the slowest pace in years. http://yhoo.it/1KO0NeL http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ
