At least 3,080 people have died of Ebola in West Africa, the World Health Organization said Friday, bringing the death toll from the worst Ebola ever above 3,000 for the first time. More than 6,500 total cases have been confirmed. The newly-released figure, which includes deaths in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, comes after a week of worsening news about the deadly disease. Estimates released Tuesday suggest that as many as 1.4 million people may be infected by the end of January under worst-case-scenario circumstances. Under the best of circumstances, the disease will still have wrecked havoc on a region that has been wholly unprepared for the public health disaster. Currently, countries from around the world are contributing millions of dollars to build facilities to treat patients. U.S. airports reported hundreds of residual flight cancellations on Saturday, a day after an employee apparently set a Chicago-area air traffic control center on fire and tried to take his own life. Former U.S. Representative James Traficant of Ohio--a brash, eccentric figure known for his bombastic speeches who went to prison for corruption--died on Saturday at age 73. His family attorney made the announcement. Police said Traficant had been hospitalized since Wednesday in critical condition, after he lost control of his 1948 Ford tractor in the barn at his home in Greenford, Ohio. The tractor rolled over and pinned him underneath. Americans toiling away in low-wage jobs already struggle to earn a living, and a new report says these meager paychecks are winnowed down by wage theft with alarming regularity. According to a first-time analysis conducted by the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute, nearly $1 billion was recovered in 2012 by lawyers or regulatory agencies acting on behalf of workers who were paid below minimum wage, not paid for overtime or other wage and hour violations. Protesters taking part in pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong said Saturday they would continue to occupy an area outside the government headquarters indefinitely until detained student activists are released. A volcano in central Japan erupted in spectacular fashion on Saturday, catching mountain climbers by surprise and injuring at least 40 people who were stranded in areas that rescue workers have been unable to reach. Another seven people were missing. The injured were in mountain lodges, because they were unable to descend 3,067-meter Mount Ontake on their own, said Sohei Hanamura, a crisis management official in Nagano prefecture.
