Wages, however, continue to lag, which means that despite things getting better, the average American is not seeing much of an improvement. Demonstrators shouted anti-Israel slogans and hurled stones, while explosions in the vicinity of the protests were audible. Beginning this month, the Calgary Police Service will start taking advantage of this software to compare mugshots with videos and photographs captured from crime scenes, CBC reported on Tuesday. Instead of manually sifting through a database consisting of 300,000 mugshots, police will now be able automate that process significantly. Once the department starts doing so, it will become the first law enforcement agency in Canada to employ facial recognition technology. According to officials, the system works via a “complex mathematical algorithm of pattern recognition to quickly screen a database of photos for potential matches.” Quick to comfort those concerned over civil liberties or potential surveillance, Inspector ...

In the US, state laws governing compensation for wrongfully convicted people vary significantly. While some states offer sizable packages for the exonerated, at least 20 offer nothing. The study, produced by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Science (ICSR) and due to be published later this month, said the role of social media in driving new recruits to Syria and Iraq was “often exaggerated.” Rather, local networks, friendships and social circles were the “decisive influence” in radicalizing young men and women to join Islamic State (also known as ISIS, or ISIL). “While online recruitment plays a role, people go because they know people who are in Syria. Visiting the Grand Canyon and other national parks could get a little pricier. The U.S. National Park Service said 115 of its 401 park units plan to seek public comment on entrance fees that could go up starting next year. It's part of a broader effort by the agency to bring in more money for visitor services. According to the National Parks Conservation Association, the budget to fund operations at parks has been cut about 8% in the past four years. The Grand Canyon announced a proposal Friday to increase its per-vehicle fee from $25 to $30 for a seven-day pass.
