Norman High AquaPonics Garden | Garden Your Own Growth

Earth Rebirth and the AP science students at Norman HS are building an AquaPonics system to produce up to 20% of the cafeteria food. Support this project here: http://kck.st/1xcVcLe The AP Environmental Science students at Norman High School have worked hard with the help of the organization Earth Rebirth to revive the high school's garden. With great success and large community support, the students now have a bigger vision in mind. They want to inspire the entire school to not just learn how to grow food, but grow organic food that the school actually consumes. With the help of the engineering group ESSA at the University of Oklahoma, designs for an AquaPonics system have been created that can contribute up to 20% of the school's food consumption. LA ecovillage: self-reliance in car-free urban homestead

In urban Los Angeles, about 3 miles west of downtown, 500 people live on 11 acres where priority is given to bicycles, fruit trees, greywater, veggie gardens, clotheslines, compost, shared spaces (tool shop, art space, bike shop), micro-businesses, on-site natural food coop and chickens. The Los Angeles Ecovillage was launched over 2 decades when its founders looked to the neighborhood for inspiration. "The way in which we think about making an urban ecovillage, we have to ask ourselves the questions, 'what are the problems in your neighborhood with air, soil and water'", explains co-founder Lois Arkin. "And for us, in the beginning, it was discovering that the children in our neighborhood had 20% less lung capacity than children in other neighborhoods. So what could we do, we could stop driving." * Filmed by Johnny Sanphillippo -- more of his stories about urbanism, adaptation & resilience: http://bit.ly/1qVv8QJ LA Ecovillage: http://bit.ly/XSFkwX Orig...

Backyard aeroponics: self-sustaining farm for Wisconsin cold

Benjamin Staffeldt grew up on a farm and works in a garden center so when he and his wife Sara moved into a rental home (a duplex), it was only natural he'd want to start farming his (shared) backyard. They began with containers and then bought a kit greenhouse to extend the growing season and were selling to local supermarkets and restaurants, but the heating bills to farm during Wisconsin winters (with temperatures as low as -70°F) was cutting sharply into their profits. They knew they had to maximize greenhouse space so they decided to grow vertical and to grow differently. They experimented with hydroponics and finally settled on aeroponics. "So aeroponics is similar to hydroponics using water rather than soil, but it's mist," explains Benjamin. "It's a mist that comes on inside the growing chamber, and it comes on every 3 minutes for 10 seconds, it's a really high oxygen water that's hitting that root. The method was actually developed and is be...

Earthships: self-sustaining homes for a post-apocalyptic US?

Comments from the original posting of the video: http://bit.ly/1xL7OW5 On the desert mesa of New Mexico, miles from the nearest town of Taos (pop. 5,700), Star-Wars-like shelters rise from the earth, half-buried and covered in adobe. Called “Earthships” - brainchild of architect Mike Reynolds in the 1970s- they’re nearly completely self-sufficient homes: no electrical grid, no water lines, no sewer. The Greater World Earthship Community, about 70 passive solar homes built from earth and trash on 633 acres, had a rough start; they were shut down as an illegal subdivision in 1997 and it took them 7 years to come to compliance. Though today, the county fully cooperates with Reynolds and his Earthship Biotecture operation to turn trash (tires, cans, glass bottles) into shelters and has even given them 2 acres to experiment with housing in anyway they like (they also provide their recycling). Sixteen years ago, Tom Duke had just finished over a decade on the pro volleyball circuit when he ...

Heating Seattle backyard studio with soda cans as solar panels

Peter Rowan left his job as a "corporate weenie" in 2010 to live a life with less stuff and fewer expenses and with more time to pursue his dreams. Since downsizing his life, he's begun writing fiction from home (in addition to a teaching gig) so for a bit more privacy, this year he decided to single-handedly convert the family's unused garage into his off-grid writing retreat. Crafting it mostly out of repurposed materials, he decided to heat it using a home-made, recycled can solar panel. After collecting 275 cans (soda, juice, mineral water and beer), he began to drill holes into the ends, glue them together and fit them into a box crafted from plywood and 2 by 4's. Adding a bit of black spray paint and some plexiglass, he created his home-made solar panel. He salvaged a couple of fans from an old computer to create a system for pushing cold air into the solar panel and pushing the hot air out and into his office. In this video, Mary Rowan used her iphone to f...
