NASA Satellites Put California Drought Into Shocking Perspective

Newly released images created from NASA satellite data illustrate the staggering effect the California drought has had on groundwater supply in the state. The images show the amount of water lost over the past 12 years, with different colors indicating severity over time. According to NASA , the Sacramento River and San Joaquin River basins have been hit the hardest by the water loss, in part because of the increasing volume of groundwater being pumped out for farming. http://on.mash.to/1rHfwAW http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Vice President Biden Likens ISIS to Ebola, Ukraine Crisis to Summon 'More Players'

Joe Biden explains how Ebola is like ISIS. (CNN) -- Vice President Joe Biden argued that the Ebola virus is on par with ISIS in Iraq and Syria when it comes to global security threats. Speaking in Boston Thursday at the Harvard Institute of Politics, Biden warned that "threats as diverse as terrorism and pandemic disease" are crossing borders "at blinding speeds," and they demand a global response involving more players "than ever before." "This has all led to a number of immediate crises that demand our attention from ISIL to Ebola to Ukraine -- just to name a few that are on our front door -- as someone said to me earlier this week, the wolves closest to the door," he said. Opinion from retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal: How to treat threats of Ebola and ISIS "Each one in its own way is symptomatic of the fundamental changes that are taking place in the world," he continued. "The international order that we painstakingly built aft...

Does Enterovirus Cause Paralysis? Doctors Still Mystified

Federal health experts issued another call Friday for doctors and hospitals to be on the lookout for a mysterious symptom that causes muscle weakness in some children who have had recent viral infections. Two reports issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention center on enterovirus-D68, which appears to be causing more infections than usual of late, and a potential link with a rare type of muscle weakness. That link is hard to pin down, said Dr. Daniel Feikin of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. http://nbcnews.to/1rHfqZY http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Obama Accuses Companies Of Not Sharing Their Success With Workers

President Barack Obama took credit for an improving jobs picture on Friday, but blamed businesses for stingy pay policies that are preventing workers from having enough money to get by. A day after giving an economic speech at Northwestern University touting the success of his administration's economic policies, Obama reveled in a new report showing the U.S. jobless rate had fallen to a six-year low. But at a town hall-style meeting at a manufacturing plant in Indiana, the president said companies that have the strongest balance sheets in history were not sharing their wealth with the employees who helped fuel their success. http://bit.ly/1pO8jIy http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

WATCH: Hong Kong protesters beaten and bloodied as thugs attack sit-in

Pro-democracy leaders call off talks with government and accuse police of sending triads against Occupy Central rally (Guardian) Thugs punched and kicked pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong on Friday night, shedding blood as they tore down demonstrators’ tents and attempted to forced them out. Student leaders called off talks with the government – offered the previous night – accusing officials of allowing violence to be used against them. It dashed the hopes of a resolution to a mass movement that saw tens of thousands take to the streets of the city at its height. The veteran democracy activist Martin Lee and Occupy Central leader Benny Tai blamed triads for the violence in Mong Kok, a densely populated area also popular with shoppers. The area is known for its gang presence. Lee told the South China Morning Post: “It was very ugly in Mong Kok, clearly the anti-Occupy people deliberately caused a scene and created trouble, giving police an excuse.” He alleged: “Because of the pres...

Blood Moon Returns, And It's Bigger

Look, up in the sky, it's the Blood moon, and it will appear to be even bigger than last time. People in the western half of the United States will see a lunar eclipse that will turn the moon a burnt reddish orange for about an hour next Wednesday, creating the second blood moon since April 15th. NASA says the full eclipse will start at 3:25 a-m Pacific time, and last until 4:24 a-m. The effect comes from the edges of the sun's rays peeking out around the Earth's atmosphere and shining on the moon, which has to be in just the right position to catch those rays. If you miss this one, NASA says yet another one is coming next April. http://bit.ly/ZBUHv0 http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

OOPS! Cops raid man’s home as they mistakes okra for weed

Police raid Georgia man’s home after mistaking okra for marijuana Okra mistaken for pot in man’s garden (WSBTV) CARTERSVILLE, Ga. — A Cartersville man is upset after he said investigators mistook a garden full of okra for marijuana plants. The man growing the popular Southern food said a helicopter woke him up Wednesday and then he had deputies show up at his door. "I was scared actually, at first, because I didn't know what was happening,” said homeowner Dwayne Perry. All he noticed was that there was a chopper sitting unusually low over his house, then Bartow County deputies and a K-9 unit appeared at his doorstep in minutes. "They were strapped to the gills,” Perry said. It turned out, that helicopter was from the Governor's Task Force for drug suppression and they were out looking for domestic cannabis plants and spotted the tree and plants. "Instead, it's okra and maybe a bush on the end of the house,” Perry said. Channel 2’s Carl Willis called the Geor...

What We Know About The U.S. Journalist Who Contracted Ebola In Liberia

Friends say the 33-year-old freelance photojournalist who contracted Ebola in Liberia this week knew that traveling there was a huge risk. Katie Meyler, founder of More Than Me, an educational charity in Monrovia, Liberia, said that the patient, Ashoka Mukpo, "wanted to help Liberians make sure that their stories were told." On Tuesday, Mukpo began a freelance job with NBC News as part of a news crew in Liberia telling the story of Ebola's latest outbreak for NBC properties. On Wednesday, Mukpo felt tired, achy and sick. He has had a few fever scares before, but told friends he thought this time it was real. He quickly self-quarantined; then, on Thursday, he tested positive for Ebola at a Doctors Without Borders facility. http://on.mash.to/ZBOUWx http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ #News

Mystery Fireball Lights up the Utah Sky

At about 4:32 a.m., the president of the Salt Lake Astronomical Society saw a green fireball soaring through the Thursday morning sky. Several others Fry talked to later saw the same thing. "There was no sonic boom but it was quite large," said Fry, who lives near 5900 S. 800 West in Murray. "It looked like [the meteor] was … a little smaller than the sun." That silence tells experts like Fry that the meteor that lit up Utah’s skies was likely far, far away from us. Patrick Wiggins, the NASA/JPL solar system ambassador to Utah, hasn’t spoken to anyone who heard any sonic boom associated with the meteor. "That tells me a big thing," Wiggins said. He pointed out that several years ago, lots of people heard a meteor that came down over Dugway Proving Ground. "A big meteor will make a lot of noise." As an extreme example, Wiggins pointed out how the large Chelyabinsk meteor that came down over Russia last year was so loud that it shattered hundreds ...

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza On Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said it is imperative that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) take every precaution to prevent the spread of Ebola before the holiday season. In a letter to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, Cruz noted that several African countries—in addition to British Airways, Emirates Airlines, and Kenya Airways—have restricted, suspended, or banned flights to Ebola-stricken nations. The White House currently has not placed any Ebola travel restrictions. Cruz also mentioned that he has spoken with Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell, who has assured him her agency is acting "vigorously" to contain Ebola. “It is imperative that the FAA take every available precaution in preventing additional cases from arriving in the United States," Cruz wrote in his letter, mentioning that "in light of the upcoming holiday travel season, the American traveling public would like to be rest assured that their safety i...

17 students suspended, 12 arrested after fight at Ark. high school WYNNE, AR - (WMC) - A fight that led to several student suspensions is going viral and some parents are blaming Memphis for the violence in Arkansas. It is the first time a big brawl like this has happened in a school in Wynne, and nobody seems to know what started it. "It really scared me. I thought a gun was going to come out or something," said Emmy Futrell. In the video students are seen pummeling each other. At one point, more students joined in the fight. Some students say the violence pushed students not involved in the fight against a wall. The fight was so out of control the school resource officer called police for help. Twelve students were arrested on Friday. School administrators looked at the video Monday and suspended 17 students for six to 10 days. It's not clear what the fight was about. "We don't think it was anything organized or preplanned, just something that happened," ...
