Cosmic Collision Sent Chelyabinsk Asteroid Hurtling Towards Earth

The Chelyabinsk meteor that exploded over Russia smashed through Earth's atmosphere on the rebound from a collision with another asteroid in space. Researchers from Tohoku University in Japan have analysed the debris left behind by the space rock, which caused the second largest asteroid airburst in human history, in an effort to help understand how near-Earth objects could end up on a crash course for our home world. The scientists found that the rocks left behind by the Chelyabinsk asteroid contained the high-pressure mineral jadeite, which is only formed under extreme pressure and high temperatures. http://onforb.es/1nbQfut http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

It's Tick Season: Beware This New Tick-Borne Parasite

Imagine microscopic parasites that invade your red blood cells. This is the danger posed by Babesiosis, a little-known tick-borne illness that the CDC has identified as an emerging threat here in the U.S. Similar to malaria, Babesiosis is caused by microscopic protozoa called Babesia which can reproduce inside red blood cells. Most cases of Babesia infection are caused by Babesia microti, but another type, Babesia divergens, has also been identified and may cause even more serious disease. Two types of ticks, deer ticks and blacklegged ticks, can carry Babesia parasites. http://onforb.es/1nBlbTj http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Powerful Photos Of McDonald's Workers Protesting For Better Pay

Hundreds of protesters descended on McDonald's headquarters this week to demand the right to unionize and a $15 minimum wage, among other things. Out of the protests came both arrests -- 138 for trespassing -- and a slew of images of marchers clashing with nightstick-wielding police officers dressed in riot gear. Here are some of the most powerful images. Police guarded the entrance of McDonald's corporate campus as about 2000 fast food workers and activists demonstrating for higher wages march toward the facility Oak Brook, Illinois. http://huff.to/1nbQeXl http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Brand New Meteor Shower Making Debut Saturday

Skywatchers in North America could see a major meteor shower overnight from Comet 209P/Linear which was discovered in 2004. It's not clear how many shooting stars will be visible, but scientists say it could range from at least 100-400 per hour. (May 23)
