Emergency Closure of Sardine Fishery Along Entire West Coast

The Pacific Fishery Management Council has voted to close the ongoing sardine fishery along the West Coast more than two months early to prevent further decline in the collapsing sardine population. The announcement comes just two days after the council voted to close the upcoming sardine season, which starts July 1. Wednesday's action takes the closure a step further, making it immediate instead of allowing fishermen to carry out the remaining weeks of this season. The mid-season closure highlights fishery managers' intense concern about a collapse that has decimated sardine stocks in recent years. Today, there are only 10 percent as many sardines in the water as there were in 2007. Council designee Michele Culver of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife proposed the closure, calling it an "urgent action." "This is not a decision the council makes lightly," Culver said. "We understand the disruption to the sardine fishery resulting from in-se...

Investors Bet on Etsy IPO

The top execs at Etsy marked its first day as a public company in the most Etsy way possible: by ringing a set of "handmade and vintage bells." Etsy, a decade old online marketplace for handcrafted goods, began trading on the Nasdaq Thursday, opening at $31 per share, nearly doubling from its IPO price, suggesting much stronger-than-expected demand for the business. Kathleen Smith of Renaissance Capital says Etsy shares my not be for everybody. The Brooklyn-based company announced late Thursday that it had priced its IPO at $16 a share, at the high-end of its previously proposed price range, raising $267 million from the public offering and valuing the company at nearly $1.8 billion. . http://on.mash.to/1PSRJI1 http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

David Crosby: The Dramatic Story of the Artists and Causes that Changed America (2000)

David Van Cortlandt Crosby (born August 14, 1941) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. In addition to his solo career, he was a founding member of three bands: The Byrds; Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN, who are sometimes joined by Neil Young as Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young [CSNY]); and CPR. Crosby has been depicted as emblematic of the counterculture. Crosby has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: once for his work in The Byrds and once for his work with CSN. Crosby joined Jim McGuinn (who later changed his name to Roger) and Gene Clark, who were then named the Jet Set. They were augmented by drummer Michael Clarke, at which point Crosby attempted, unsuccessfully, to play bass. Late in 1964, Chris Hillman joined as bassist, and Crosby relieved Gene Clark of rhythm guitar duties. Through connections that Jim Dickson (The Byrds' manager) had with Bob Dylan's publisher, the band obtained a demo acetate disc of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine M...

Dangerous Radioactive Material Stolen Again In Mexico

Authorities issued an alert for several Mexican states after thieves snatched potentially deadly radioactive material used for industrial radiography. The iridium-192 source, marked X-571, was inside a container when it was stolen on Monday from a truck in Cardenas, a town in southern Tabasco state, the interior ministry said in statement. The ministry launched an alert for civil protection authorities in the states of Tabasco, Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca and Veracruz, as well as the federal police, the navy and the army. The theft was reported by a company named Garantia Radiografica e Ingenieria. The ministry said that, if not handled with proper protection, "this source could cause permanent injuries to the person who handles it or who has been in contact with it for a brief time (minutes or hours)." "Being close to this quantity of unprotected radioactive material for hours or days could be fatal," the statement warned. http://yhoo.it/1NOuuAo
