For-profit prisons have created a “neo-slavery” in the US, according to award-winning journalist Chris Hedges. Inmates work eight hours per day for major corporations such as Chevron, Motorola, Nordstrom’s and Target, yet only have the possibility of making up to $1.25 an hour. In addition, companies that provide services like phone calls overcharge prisoners on even the most basic services, making hundreds of millions in profits annually. Yemen's former president Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi has fled the capital, Sanaa, weeks after he was put under house arrest by Houthi rebels who forced him to resign. Mr Hadi is thought to have reached the main southern city of Aden. It comes a day after rival parties agreed on the formation of a transitional council to govern the country. Yemen has been in crisis since the takeover by the Houthis, a Shia group. A new chart, from the "climate reanalyzer" tool out of the University of Maine, shows forecast temperature departures from average on Friday. The eastern U.S., as well as parts of Canada, sticks out for having the most unusually cold conditions on the planet on Friday. In fact, much of the rest of North America — including the western U.S., northwest Canada and Alaska — along with most areas of the world, are milder than average.
