Fighting GMO: Hundreds of US Farmers Sue Syngenta Over Genetically Modified Corn

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza Corn growers in the U.S. lost an upwards of $3 billion in revenue last year after the Chinese boycotted shipments of American corn following the discovery of a genetically modified seed that had not yet been approved in the country. Agrisure Viptera, a seed genetically altered to contain a protein that kills corn-eating bugs such as earworms and cutworms, had not been approved by China in November 2013 when it was found in several U.S. corn shipments. http://bit.ly/1ENIx2l

Venezuela vows to respond 'soon' to new US sanctions

Caracas has pledged to respond to the sanctions Washington imposed on seven Venezuelan officials on Monday. Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez says the response will be made public soon. It came after White House Spokesman Josh Earnest said the Venezuelan officials will face asset freezes in the US and will be banned from using US financial systems. Earnest said the measures were part of an executive order by US President Barack Obama. He also called Venezuela a national security threat to the US. Tensions between Washington and Caracas heightened this month after Venezuela set a two-week deadline for the US to cut its embassy staff in Caracas. Venezuela said that's a response to Washington's conspiracies against the government of President Nicholas Maduro. Horrid ‘video visits’ on the rise in US prisons

Across the US, more and more prison facilities are implementing video visitation systems, side-stepping in-person visits altogether. U.N. Expert Wants North Korea Held Accountable for Decades of Abductions

A United Nations human rights investigator on Monday recommended international pressure be put on North Korea to clarify the fate of hundreds of foreign nationals allegedly abducted over decades, mainly from Japan and South Korea. Marzuki Darusman, an independent expert, laid out the strategy in a report to the U.N. Human Rights Council and said that the International Criminal Court in the Hague was "competent for prosecuting these perpetrators". The report is due for debate next Monday at the 47-member forum where Japan and the European Union are also expected to present a resolution denouncing political prison camps and other crimes in North Korea and seeking renewal of Darusman's mandate http://bit.ly/1NBhhZ5 http://bit.ly/1fJ5yqZ

Life on the road: converted budget van as free camping home

At 25 years old, Robin Raindropcatcher had never owned a car and didn’t have a driver’s license, but he dreamed of turning a van into a mobile shelter. When he lost his job and his “dream flat” in Vienna began to weigh on him, he moved in with his mother, passed his driver’s test and began converting a minivan into a new home. Spending only about 700 euros, Robin used chipboard to create lightweight furniture and foam and reflective foil for insulation. His roughly 50-square-foot shelter now offers: a “living room/bedroom” (a convertible couch becomes a 2 meter long bed), storage cabinets that double as a dining/tea table, a lean kitchen (a propane camping stove) and an even leaner loo (a plastic water bottle for the “small stuff”; trips to cafes for the “big stuff”). With his new home on his back, Robin headed south from Vienna for Italy, France and Spain and points beyond (he video blogs about his travels). Boondocking in big cities hasn’t always been easy, but he’s been surprised a...

How Private Companies Are Gaming The Welfare State

The Jobs Game: How private companies are manipulating the welfare systems of Western countries in order to maximise their profits. Subscribe to Journeyman for daily uploads: http://bit.ly/1yQF9zI Unemployment in Australia is at its highest in 12 years. The Government's solution is an innovative billion-dollar scheme called Jobs Services Australia. But the initiative is failing. This investigation shows how the scheme is being manipulated and, at times, systematically exploited. Reporter Linton Besser reveals the corruption at the heart of the program aimed at helping some of this country's most vulnerable people. He travels to suburbs where unemployment is a way of life. He meets Kym, struggling to find work and pull her daughter out of a cycle of poverty. There to help are private and not-for-profit job agencies, paid by the Government to help find work for Kym and others like her. These agencies have blossomed thanks to the privatisation of the Commonwealth Employment Servic...

Netanyahu: I will never give land to Palestinians

The Israeli prime minister says Tel Aviv will NOT give away any occupied land to Palestinians, rejecting the idea as irrelevant. Benjamin Netanyahu claims any evacuated territory will fall into the hands of Islamic extremism and terror organizations supported by Iran. His office was quick to deny the comment. But Netanyahu has repeatedly said he would not run the risk of handing over land that might fall into the hands of the resistance movement. Top Palestinian Negotiator Saeb Erekat has slammed Netanyahu saying he has revealed his true face. The international community has been pushing for the creation of a Palestinian state on lands occupied by Israel in the 1967 war. But numerous rounds of talks have failed to produce any results ever since. China's Wind Farms Can Now Produce More Energy Than All of America's Nuclear Plants

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza China is building more than a third of the world’s nuclear reactors currently under construction, and has plans to triple its nuclear power capacity by 2020. That has some observers worried about the country’s opaque and politicized nuclear safety regulations. But amid all the hype over nuclear power, China has been expanding its wind power capacity at an even faster clip. Last year, China’s wind farms reached a capacity of 115,000 megawatts, compared with just 20,000 megawatts from its nuclear sector. (To be sure, capacity is different than the actual amount of energy created.) 1 Working at full pace, China’s wind farms could now produce more energy than all of the nuclear power plants in the US. http://bit.ly/1Bia62F

Rand Paul Launches 'Stop Obama's Ammo Ban' Campaign

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is hoping to flood the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) with public comments in an effort to get the agency to back off of its “backdoor” attempt to ban the popular “green tip” bullet. “President Obama is determined to cement his anti-gun agenda into law,” begins a letter signed by Paul and posted to the website of his political action committee, RANDPAC. “I’m counting on your immediate action to help RANDPAC flood the agency with a message from America’s pro-gun majority,” Paul writes in his letter. BATFE is accepting public comment until March 17 on its proposal to ban .223 M855 “green tip” ammunition. The Obama administration backs the effort, arguing that it is needed because the bullets can pierce bullet-proof vests worn by police. “This seems to be an area where everyone should agree that if there are armor-piercing bullets available that can fit into easily concealed weapons, that it puts our law enforceme...

Florida Officials Ban The Terms "Climate Change" and "Global Warming"

http://bit.ly/1zfNXza Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection is tasked with protecting the state’s “air, water and land.” But there’s one environmental threat you won’t hear DEP officials talking about. Officials at Florida’s DEP have banned the words “climate change” and “global warming” from all official communications, including reports and emails, according to an investigation published Sunday by the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting (FCIR). Four former DEP employees told FCIR that they had been instructed not to use the terms during their time at the state’s DEP. “We were told not to use the terms ‘climate change,’ ‘global warming’ or ‘sustainability,’” Christopher Byrd, who served as an attorney with the DEP’s Office of General Counsel from 2008 to 2013, told FCIR. “That message was communicated to me and my colleagues by our superiors in the Office of General Counsel.” The DEP’s press secretary Tiffany Cowie disagreed with these reports, however, saying that ...
