Fukushima Fear: Radiation rises, 'nobody really knows how to dodge disaster'

There's a worrying spike in radiation at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Readings from a water storage tank have rocketed six-and-a-half-thousand times higher in two days. A powerful typhoon swept through Japan earlier this week, causing toxic waters to be released into a drainage ditch leading to the Pacific Ocean. It's compounded what's been a worsening situation at the plant in recent months, as Irina Galushko explains. Debt Ceiling Solution: Stop borrowing from the FED!!!

WASHINGTON DC | Is the FED the Key Factor Behind the Debt Limit? Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew is calling on Congress to raise the debt limit in February. The Treasury Department now expects the debt limit "endgame" to arrive in late February, rather than in March. To some observers, this is rather surprising, since just last week, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid indicated the nation wasn't likely to hit the debt ceiling until May. Lew wrote in a letter to Congressional leaders that "the large obligations of the government that occur in the month of February" will soon put a strain on the government. Lew also wrote: "Protecting the full faith and credit of the United States is the responsibility of Congress, because only Congress can extend the nation's borrowing authority. No Congress in our history has failed to meet that responsibility. I respectfully urge Congress to provide certainty and stability to the economy and financial markets by acting...

Gov't Board Slaps NSA

Has government spying on Americans gone too far? A five-member federal privacy board is saying that is the case. A new report states spying by the NSA, FBI and other agencies is illegal and that such programs must end. It says that section 215 of the PATRIOT Act, which authorizes such spying "...implicates constitutional concerns under the First and Fourth Amendments, raises serious threats to privacy and civil liberties as a policy matter, and has shown only limited value." The report summarizes its conclusion with the determination that "...the board recommends that the government end the program." The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board is managed by the Executive branch of government, and was created in 2007. This is their first year in operation. David Medine, a former official in the Federal Trade Commission under Bill Clinton, leads the group. This is the strongest opposition President Obama has faced from any such government groups over domestic spy...
