Deek's "RELAX SHACK"- a tiny house/cabin or office of recycled materials

Derek "Deek" Diedricksen shares a colorful and simple build that collectively tackled at one of his Relaxshacks.com workshops- a full hands-on, camping event. This tiny house building workshop, which took place in 2013, is one of many events Deek has hosted, the most recent being 2014's "Tiny House Summer Camp 2"- which, as all others, sold out. For this particular 2013 workshop, Deek, Dustin (Deek's brother), and about 30 students took on two design and build projects over three days- one which became this tiny little backyard office or cabin here. This structure is mainly made of free, salvaged, and recycled, materials. Deek's Blog- www.relaxshacks.com More tiny houses at http://bit.ly/1mtdNxG too! #News

Cozy Log Cabin- How I built it for less than $500.

This simple, but cozy bush cabin was constructed in my spare time, and was completed in 8 months. My youth group, and several people from my church were a huge help. I wouldn't have been able to complete it in time without them. I am aware that 8 months isn't necessarily a fast building time, but keep in mind: this cabin is somewhat isolated, no machinery was used, all the logs and materials had to be carried under our shoulders, I often worked alone and in at least 3 feet of snow, I built this in my spare time when I wasn't working 50+ hours at my jobs, or spending time with my family. And any construction project takes longer when it's out in the bush. Some people have noticed that I have a gas can in the corner of the cabin next to the stove. Obviously it is dangerous to keep a gas can near a running stove. The only reason why the gas can is there, is because I temporarily put it there for filming. The stove was off, and as soon as I was done filming, I returned the...

LA ecovillage: self-reliance in car-free urban homestead

In urban Los Angeles, about 3 miles west of downtown, 500 people live on 11 acres where priority is given to bicycles, fruit trees, greywater, veggie gardens, clotheslines, compost, shared spaces (tool shop, art space, bike shop), micro-businesses, on-site natural food coop and chickens. The Los Angeles Ecovillage was launched over 2 decades when its founders looked to the neighborhood for inspiration. "The way in which we think about making an urban ecovillage, we have to ask ourselves the questions, 'what are the problems in your neighborhood with air, soil and water'", explains co-founder Lois Arkin. "And for us, in the beginning, it was discovering that the children in our neighborhood had 20% less lung capacity than children in other neighborhoods. So what could we do, we could stop driving." * Filmed by Johnny Sanphillippo -- more of his stories about urbanism, adaptation & resilience: http://bit.ly/1qVv8QJ LA Ecovillage: http://bit.ly/XSFkwX Orig...
