NATION | The coming 2014 U.S. Retail Apocalypse is on the horizon despite the 2014 economic report of the President has been release by Obama's "Council of Economic Advisers". The White House states the report, "discusses the progress that has been made in recovering from the worst recession since the Great Depression, and President Obama's agenda to build on this progress by creating jobs and expanding economic opportunity." However John Williams the analyst at ShadowStats.com latest report revealed "Payroll Jobs Increased by 175,000, but the Number of actual employed Employed rose by only 42,000, Williams also noted that "deliberate misreporting showed December payrolls up by 84,000, Where 67,000 aas the Consistent Number." But how's is the retail sector doing? Michael Snyder editor of the "Economic collapse Blog" paints a very different picture of the retail marketplace. In his report titled "20 Facts About The Great U.S. Retail Apocalypse That Will Blow Your Mind" he examines multiple retail chain stores earnings reports and press releases. What you are about to hear is the picture of the economy, Snyder paints, from the mouths of the retail sector themselves and not an analyst in the White House. There is currently 1 billion square feet of retail space sitting vacant in the United States, about to add to that figure last week, Radio Shack announced it was going to close more than a thousand stores, as office retailer Staples announced 225 stores were about to get chopped. And Staples competitor Office Depot reports sales have been declining for 13 straight quarters.. Clothing retailer J.C. Penney just announced plans to close 33 stores and 2000 jobs after losing 586 million dollars in the second quarter of 2013 alone. Joining Penney's CNN reported Sears Sears is "expected to shutter another 500 Sears and Kmart locations soon" after closing nearly 300 stores since 2010. Sales at Sears has been declining for 27 straight quarters. Macy's is closing 5 stores eliminating 2,500 jobs and big box store Target is eliminating 475 jobs. Niche store Aéropostale is projected it will close about 175 stores and "The Children's Place" announced that it will be closing 125 locations by 2016. Best Buy is closing 15 Canadian locations and cut 900 jobs after shuttering 50 US stores in 2012, while Blockbuster Video has completely shut down all of their stores. In the food sector analysts project that even with a growing population grocery store sales will decline by 1.7 percent (3rd paragraph) as McDonalds sales dipped 3.3 percent in January. Superstore Wal-Mart is not immune to the economic collapse. David Cheesewright, CEO of Walmart International recently stated that Wal-Mart is going to try to protect US market share - in light of the companies domestic "earnings warning" - by fostering the growth from outside the US. However Cheesewright pointed out, "We're seeing economies under stress pretty much everywhere we operate" Snyder wraps his 20 points with a forecast from retail consultant Howard Davidowitz who predicts in 15 to 20 years half of America's shopping malls will fail and that "only upscale shopping centers with anchors like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus will survive." Now if you account for the number of consumers migrating to online shopping Snyder makes it a point that retail experts can only attribute 20% of the decline to Internet shoppers. The rest, Snyder attributes to "the slow, steady death of the middle class U.S. consumer." He reports , "median household income has declined for five years in a row, but all of our bills just keep going up. That means that the amount of disposable income that average Americans have continues to shrink, and that is really bad news for retailers."
